The castle was built in the thirteenth Century by will of the Counts of Sanframondo, in a strategic position between the ountains Acero and Gioia, elevated in comparison to the level of the river Titerno.
From 1479 to 1520 it was property of the Monsorio family.
Between the fifteenth and the seventeenth Century the Monsorio submitted the building to a massive restoration, getting ideas from Castel Nuovo in Naples, as you can deduce by the inner courtyard’s planimetry, main prospectus and setting.
In 1612 it became property of Gabriele De Martino or Martino, Duke of Faicchio, who restored the castle once again, turning it into a comfortable house, while keeping some defensive functions. From then, the castle was named “ducal” in honor of Duke De Martino.
