History

The Medieval village of Gavignano is developed around the ancient castle, dominating it from above, created by the Earls of Segni and known today as Baronal Palace. Here, in 1161was born Lotario, member of the family of the Earls of Segni, becoming then Pope with the name of Innocenzo III.
After the damages of 1495, the Palace was completely transformed by the recovery interventions, becoming always more and more a typical residence with courtyards, ample salons and rooms for maids. It was the Aldobrandini family in the fifteenth Century who deeply renovated the building, elevating the main entrance compared to the street, while new interventions in the twentieth Century tried to restore the medieval appearance of the castle. In the current entrance you can notice a tuff portal entitled to Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, who died in 1621.
